FIRE CHIEF

Job Description

The Fire Chief provides administrative direction and leadership for all Stanley Fire Department functions, operations, and personnel through the supervision of staff and a review of their activities. Responsibilities include: reviewing the general operation of the department to determine efficiency; providing direction on major projects or problem areas; planning for the future; developing and implementing policies and procedures; and providing policy guidance; preparing for and ensuring response to natural and other disasters. The Fire Chief works under the direction of the Town Manager and is evaluated on the basis of attainment of individual and department goals and objectives, periodic conferences with the Town Manager, activity reports, feedback from other fire agencies, public support and is responsible for consulting with the Town Manager regarding issues affecting protection of life and property in the Town.  Must be able to plan, prepare and follow a yearly recommended department budget for review and approval of the Town Manager, and final approval of the Town Council.

Minimum Requirements

Required:

  • NC Chief 101;
  • NC Firefighter Certification (NFPA 1001);
  • NC Emergency Medical Technician (EMT);
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800;
  • NC Fire Officer Level 1;
  • 10 Years Minimum in the Professional Fire Service
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License
  • Residency within city limits of the Town of Stanley (At Town Manager’s discretion, may allow residency outside city limits, as circumstances dictate)

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and perform repetitive motions. Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and 10 pounds of force frequently.

Must possess the visual acuity to perform accounting, computer work, and extensive reading in addition to ability to distinguish people and objects at emergency scenes.

Essential Functions

Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with staff, Town officials, community organizations, other fire departments, other agencies, Town departments and the general public. Shows the ability to make effective verbal and written presentation in order to speak to public groups on the plans, programs and goals of the Stanley Fire Department. Prepare a monthly report for submission to the Town Manager to be included in a report to Town Council as directed by the Town Council.  Recruit and maintain appropriate level of staff and volunteers as approved by the Town Manager and Town Council. Additional duties, as assigned.

CURRENT JOB VACANCIES  

Position Title: Part-Time Firefighter/EMT

Hourly Rate: $12.00 per hour

Work Shifts:  Monday – Sunday Shifts (7:00am – 3:00pm)(10:00am-6:00pm)

Responsibilities:

The Part-Time Firefighter will have the responsibility to ensure that the fire departments apparatus, equipment and facilities are maintained at the appropriate readiness levels to respond to a variety of life saving emergency calls. Our Part-Time Firefighters are primarily responsible for performing difficult and lifesaving work at emergency scenes including fire suppression, rescue, fire prevention activities, emergency medical care, general preparatory work at the fire station, checking equipment for proper operation and general condition, and performing and assisting with routine maintenance of apparatus and equipment.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED required.

Minimum age of 21

 

Licensing/Certification Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Driver’s License or other state equivalent
  • Certified North Carolina Firefighter

.        NC State Certified Pumps Introduction, Pumps Basic Operation, EVD

  • NCOEMS Credentialed Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
