Our town logo features the Large Leafed Magnolia. In 1785 the French Government sent Andre' Michaux, a botanist, to document plants and trees in America. He not only introduced to our country the Crepe Myrtle tree, the Ginkgo Tree and the Mimosa Tree, he discovered the Large Leafed Magnolia tree in the Stanley area. Andre' Michaux was also propositioned by the "American Philosophical Society" to explore the lands beyond the Appalachian Mountains to the west and report back to them his findings, this being before the Lewis and Clark explorations. Although Michaux declined the proposition, he became well acquainted with the politically elite of this country, such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Alexander Hamilton. The second part of our logo features the motto "A Friendly Place". In 1960 the town held a contest where citizens were requested to submit their ideas of an official town motto. Mr. Alfred Rhyne submitted the winning idea and "A Friendly Place" was adopted as a proper and fitting motto for the Town.
